How to Paint Pottery & Ceramics:  Marbling Technique

The Marbling Technique on this heart plate is fun and easy! The pink and red colors of this marbled heart plate were inspired by, what else, love! You can apply the Marbling Technique to many pieces of pottery. And what a better Valentine's Day gift?!

Supplies

  • Heart Plate Bisque
  • Water
  • Cups
  • Flat Paint Brush
  • Paint Colors: Light Pink (14) and Dark Pink (18)
  • Fun Writer Colors: Pink (16) and Dark Pink (18)

Marbling Technique on Ceramic Heart

Steps

  1. Water down base color: light pink (14) – in a cup, add water to the paint and stir thoroughly until the mixture is the consistency of milk
  1. Pour the mixture onto the heart plate, and tilt the plate around until the entire bottom of the plate is covered with the base color
  1. Add accent colors: pink (16) and dark pink (18). Take the pin and pink top off of the fun writers and squirt paint across the plate.
  1. Pick up plate and tilt around to create the marbling effect
  1. Drain excess paint into a cup
  1. Paint rim dark pink (18) with a flat brush – apply 3 coats of paint

My fiancé and I try to go to the aquarium every valentines day. When we first met he told me he never went to an aquarium before so I took him to the one in gatlinburg as a valentines day present. Now it’s a tradition!

Always a big yay!!!! We’re never too busy to tell family and friends how much we love them! We are making Valentines and cookies for Bri’s 4th grade party! We usually get a nice lunch or dinner out all together. Then we look over Bri’s Valentines from classmates together. Fun! Happy Valentine’s Day, Polka Dot Pots! <3

Hey there, I am loving watching these techniques, can’t wait to try them at my class! Would love to know, are you putting these paints on freshly bisqued pieces? And are you using underglazes for the color and then saying they are then ready to be glazed and fired with a clear glaze? My daughter loves the heart plate and she says YAY! Thanks for your info!

Hi Siendo!

We use Fun Strokes by Gare, which is an underglaze. Once the paint is dry, we then dip each item in a clear glaze, also from Gare. Please let me know if I can answer any other questions for you!

The effect of going from light to dark colors is called "ombre." It looks great and is super easy! You can apply the ombre effect to many pieces of pottery, and you can use all kinds of colors (we have so many different shades of pink in our studios, it's not even funny)! My favorite alternate title for this video blog is: Four Shades of Purple!
