How to Paint Pottery & Ceramics:  Ombre Effect -- Mom's Coffee Mug

The effect of going from light to dark colors is called "ombre." It looks great and is super easy! You can apply the ombre effect to many pieces of pottery, and you can use all kinds of colors (we have so many different shades of pink in our studios, it's not even funny)! My favorite alternate title for this video blog is: Four Shades of Purple!

Mom's Coffee and Tea Ceramic Mug Painting Supplies

Steps

  1. Apply stickers
  2. Ombre! – First, dab one coat of light purple paint onto the lower part of the mug with a natural sponge. Second, dab one coat of darker purple paint above the light purple on the mug and make sure the shades of purple overlap.  Now, go back to the light purple and repeat.  Continue to alternate with all four shades of purple up the mug.
  3. Remove stickers with toothpick

I would like to use a couple shades of yellow on the bottom and then a couple shades of blue on the top. My mom has those colors in her kitchen and would make it for her!

I never thought I would be able to do ombre, but after seeing the video I am ready to try. I’m thinking I would do different shades of bright yellow for a coffee mug to help me wake up even more in the morning. Thanks!

My favorite colors are lime green and orange, so I’m not sure which colors I would use—possibly make two different mugs—one with variations of each color!
