How to Paint Pottery & Ceramics:  Splatter Mug

There's nothing more fun that throwing paint onto a mug!  Learn how to paint this mug with the super fun splatter technique in 3 easy steps!

Supplies 

  • Short Mug with Lid Bisque
  • Paint Pod Colors: Black and Red (20)
  • Large and Small Paint Brushes
  • Banding Wheel
  • Splatter Box

Steps

  1. Paint the inside black – apply 3 coats of paint
  2. Paint the outside red – apply 3 coats of paint
  3. Splatter Time:
  • Ask a Polka Dot Pots team member for the splatter box;
  • Place the banding wheel inside the splatter box and then place the mug UPSIDE DOWN on the banding wheel;
  • Load up a small, round brush with black paint (to the point that the paint is almost dripping off the brush); and
  • Start with your brush back and then, with a quick flick of the wrist, fling the paint forward on to the mug (TIP: finish with the brush pointing at the mug).

Hi Siendo,

I’m sorry I didn’t see this comment earlier. You do not have paint white first. In fact, whatever you don’t paint will be white and shiny since we use a clear underglaze.
