How to Paint Pottery & Ceramics:  Bubbles Technique

We had to do the New Year's Eve episode of How to Paint Pottery featuring the Bubbles Technique. It is so much fun and easy! The colors of this plate were inspired by my favorite way to celebrate the New Year: Rose Champagne! You can apply the Bubbles Technique to many pieces of pottery.

Supplies

  • Coupe Dinner Plate Bisque
  • Soap
  • Straws
  • Cups
  • Paint Colors: Light Pink (11) and Pink (12)

Bubbles Technique on Ceramics Plate

Steps

  1. Make bubbles concoction – mix equal parts soap, paint, and water in a cup
  1. Blow bubbles – with a straw, blow into the cup and let the bubbles overflow onto the plate. Apply as much or as little bubbles as you want.
  1. Pop most of the bubbles with your hand
  1. While waiting for it to dry, sit back and imagine how impressed your friends will be when you present a selection of fine cheeses on this bubbly beauty! Extra points if you sip on Rose Champagne!

Learn how to paint your own pottery and ceramics at Polka Dot Pots! We are located in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, Smoky Mountains, Tennessee, and Poconos, Pennsylvania. We'll teach you techniques that are so easy, anyone can create a masterpiece!

I celebrate New Year’s Eve by going to the shore at Seaside Heights, NJ and I watch the fireworks at night and I play in the arcades and look for shells by the ocean. It’s so much fun!

I absolutely love starting off the new year with a glass of sparkling cider (I can’t drink champagne quite yet!) and I also love watching the ball drop!

Playing games with family is the best! I love playing Pictionary and Catch Phrase, and classic games like Chutes and Ladders.

Hi Mund,

First off, thank you for watching our video! To answer your question, as long as your top, clear glaze is food safe, your items will be as well. We have found, though, that with the soap in this technique it is necessary to dip the item in the clear glaze twice (instead just once as with all other pieces) before firing in order to achieve the same high gloss finish as all other pieces.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask!

Thank you,

Erin

hi, if i do this on my greenware pottery & then glaze it with a transparent glaze will it be foodsafe. Not sure if adding dishwash liquid to pottery still make it foodsafe. Thanks for making this video. It is a really fun technique.

My favorite way to bring in the New Year is spending it with my brother and his wife, and friends. We go out and eat early and come back to one of the homes and watch the count down, bringing in the New Year…..along with a glass of wine of course.

New year is always with my family with lots of food and drink and fun.
My daughter did your bubble technique in a cup and it turned out awesome. Next time we go to Polka Dot Pots I think I’ll try it on a bowl. Love it.

The effect of going from light to dark colors is called "ombre." It looks great and is super easy! You can apply the ombre effect to many pieces of pottery, and you can use all kinds of colors (we have so many different shades of pink in our studios, it's not even funny)! My favorite alternate title for this video blog is: Four Shades of Purple!
